Hoping that all who choose to attend will have a great time as it's certainly something to experience at least once. It's still a bit early for fall color here, but there are a few spots and, in NYC, street-shooting is a year-round sport. Instead, we went on our own "photo-walk" yesterday using the (more than sufficient) gear that we already own. We (three friends and I) will not be attending this year for the same reasons. As someone who is normally very patient and slow to anger, the past few shows have pushed all of the wrong buttons and I don't want to go in that direction. Anyway, I can walk into B&H, check out the same gear and get the desired information without being elbowed aside, poked with a 400mm lens (that someone thinks is cool to have mounted on his camera for no conceivable shooting situation in this venue) or tripping over a huge rolling case that serves no purpose on a crowded exhibition floor. The crowds make it nearly impossible to get ones hands on the very equipment I might be interested in or even ask a question or two. Maybe this show has gotten too big for its own good. However, the past few years have turned me off on the whole experience. Living a 20 minute subway ride away from the Javits Center is a nice thing and the B&H shuttle bus even eliminated the walk from the subway. I even worked in the Nikonians booth (I was a Nikon shooter for over 40 years) one year and had a lot of fun meeting like-minded folks. For many years, I attended PPE on opening day (and often all 3 days) and always looked forward to October.
